While I was growing up, one piece of advice my father would often repeat was: “You must pray your five daily prayers so that Allah grants you success.” It was something he said so often that it became etched in my memory. However, as a child, I struggled to fully accept it. From what I could see, many of the wealthiest and most “successful” people in the world were not Muslims, and some didn’t even believe in God. It made me wonder: How could success be tied to prayer when so many without it seemed to have everything?
As I matured, I came to realize that my father’s words carried a much deeper meaning. He wasn’t speaking solely about success in this temporary world; he was referring to the everlasting success of the Hereafter. True success, in his view and in reality, is not measured by wealth, fame, or achievements, but by one’s standing with Allah and preparation for the life after death.
Allah emphasizes this in Surah Al-Mu’minun, where He says:
“Certainly will the believers have succeeded: they who are during their prayer humbly submissive…”
(23:1-2)
In this verse, success is not tied to material possessions but to faith, humility, and devotion – qualities that are nurtured through sincere and consistent prayer.
Salah is more than just a religious duty; it is a connection to Allah, a daily reminder of our purpose, and a means of purifying the soul. Through prayer, a believer remains grounded, grateful, patient, and mindful of the ultimate goal: earning Allah’s pleasure and attaining Paradise.
Now, when I reflect on my father’s advice, I understand it clearly. Worldly success is fleeting, but the success that comes through faith, obedience, and prayer is everlasting. True success begins with a heart that bows to its Creator, and that journey starts with the five daily prayers.
“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a grain of corn that sprouts seven ears; in every ear, there are a hundred grains. Allah multiplies the good deeds for whom He wills.”
