Episode Eight: When Your Story Is Measured – Lessons from My Quiet Years

“My name is Musa Tawhid. This is my path.”

Through the years, I looked for my reflection in the mirror of the world. I thought my value was measured by the noise I made or the titles I held. But the “Straight Path” isn’t a race to be won; it is a garden to be tended.

In my quiet years, I looked away from the mirror and toward the Ummah. I saw the beauty in the small, unseen moments of my Nigerian brothers and sisters. I saw the mother in Lagos waking up before the sun to pray and then sell her wares; I saw the student in Kano sharing his only meal with a stranger.

I realized that true victory isn’t in the applause of the crowd, but in the pleasure of the Lord.

The Prophets didn’t just come to teach us how to pray; they came to teach us how to be. From Ibrahim’s (AS) hospitality to the Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) gentleness, the lesson was always the same: Character is the bridge to the Divine.

I learned that in our struggle, we are never truly alone. Whether you are the sister crying in secret during Tahajjud or the brother working a hard job to keep his family’s dignity, you are part of a story much larger than yourself. We are a body; when one part hurts, the whole body feels it.

In the silence, I learned that giving is the best cure for a heavy heart. Just as water puts out a fire, a simple act of kindness—giving to the poor or helping a neighbour—washes away our mistakes.

I stopped trying to be what the world expected and started trying to be what Allah called me to be. I found that when you find your identity in the One who created you, your entire perspective changes. You stop running from the storm and start building a shelter for others.

My name is Musa Tawhid. This is what I found when I stopped running.

See you on the next one –  March 11th.
